Star anise whole crop. Star anise (Illicium verum) is a spice and herb native to southern China. It has long been used as a spice and in medicine in the Far East. Nowadays, it is grown mainly in the Guangxi Chuang area of southern China, and the crop harvested between March and May accounts for a significant percentage of the world's supply of star anise. Gourmets can use it to make cakes, compotes, soups and teas for its special taste and aroma. It is an essential spice in some absinthe liqueurs.
